Carol R. Horowitz, MD, MPH, is Professor of Population Health Science and Policy, Professor of Medicine and a practicing general internist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is the founding Dean of the Office of Career Opportunity and Support and Founding Director of the Institute for Health Equity Research. Her research focuses on using participatory research to improve the health of diverse individuals with or at risk for chronic diseases. She is a leader and innovator in stakeholder engagement in research, including conducting formative research, clinical trials and using large datasets to study multiple determinants of health, and of efforts to ensure that advances in science and medicine, including genomics and AI, benefit all populations. Her work has led to improved patient outcomes, clinical practices and new health policies.
A continuously funded researcher for decades, having received over $100 million in federal funding, Dr. Horowitz actively mentors faculty and trainees. She also leads efforts to ensure that women have an opportunity to thrive and succeed in academic medicine, for which her team received the AAMC Women in Medicine and Science Emerging Leadership Award. Other awards include the US DHHS Award for Excellence for Contributions to Diabetes; Madrina (Godmother) of the NYC Three Kings Day Parade, Spencer Forman Award for Outstanding Community Service, The Rudin NYC Prize in Medicine and Health, The Jacobi Medallion and Crain’s New York Business Notable in Healthcare. She received an MD from Cornell University, was a primary care resident at Albert Einstein, earned an MPH from the University of Washington and was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar.
